Hello and welcome back! After the last video, I wanted to share something uplifting and positive. So, I sat down to watch the film Sweet Bean by Naomi Kawase. This movie is special because it tells the story of a Dorayaki baker struggling to keep his shop alive. Along the way, he meets wonderful, heartwarming people—including an elderly woman who holds the secret to making delicious bean paste and offers to help him, though there’s a catch. Sweet Bean is adapted from the book Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa.

こんにちは、またお越しください！前回の動画の後、元気が出る前向きなお話をシェアしたくて、河瀬直美監督の映画『あん』を観ました。この映画は、どら焼き職人が店の存続に奮闘する物語という点で特別な作品です。彼は道中で、素敵な人々、心温まる人々に出会います。中には、美味しいあんこを作る秘訣を握るおばあちゃんもいて、彼に協力を申し出ますが、そこには落とし穴があります。『あん』はドリアン助川の小説『あんこ』を原作としています。

Naomi Kawase, the director, hails from Nara, where the film is set. Her previous works include Still the Water (2014) and Suzaku (1997). She has directed nine films in total. Her touch in this movie is both enchanting and beautiful. She has a deep love for cherry blossoms (sakura), which inspired me to buy the Blu-ray. The film features many stunning sakura scenes, and even though I knew little about the story beforehand, I was delighted by what I discovered.

監督の河瀨直美さんは、本作の舞台である奈良出身です。過去の作品には『静まり返る水』（2014年）、『萌の朱雀』（1997年）などがあり、計9本の映画を監督しています。本作における彼女のタッチは、妖艶で美しく、まさに圧巻です。監督は桜を深く愛しており、そのことがBlu-ray購入の決め手となりました。本作には息を呑むほど美しい桜のシーンが数多く登場し、ストーリーについてはほとんど知識がなかったにもかかわらず、新たな発見があり、大変嬉しく思いました。

The actress portraying the elderly woman is truly remarkable. Her name was Kirin Kiki, who sadly passed away in 2018. She had a long and distinguished career starting in the 1970s and appeared in many acclaimed films, including Shoplifters and Like Father, Like Son—both highly recommended if you’re interested in Japanese cinema. There are also excellent videos about Shoplifters available on YouTube.

この老婦人を演じた女優は実に素晴らしい。樹木希林さんという方で、残念ながら2018年に亡くなられました。1970年代から長く輝かしいキャリアを築き、『万引き家族』や『そして父になる』など、数々の名作に出演しました。日本映画に興味のある方には、どちらもぜひお勧めです。『万引き家族』に関する素晴らしい動画もYouTubeで公開されています。

Sweet Bean earned numerous awards at film festivals worldwide, and Kirin Kiki received well-deserved recognition for her outstanding performance. It’s wonderful because she truly was an extraordinary actress.

『スイートビーン』は世界中の映画祭で数々の賞を受賞し、樹木希林もその卓越した演技で当然の評価を受けました。彼女は本当に並外れた女優だったのですから、素晴らしいことです。

This film invites reflection on the value of friendship and why it matters so deeply in our lives. After watching it, I felt grateful for the many good people around me.

この映画は、友情の大切さ、そしてそれが私たちの人生においてなぜこれほど深く大切なのかについて深く考えさせてくれます。観終わった後、周りの多くの善良な人々に感謝の気持ちが湧いてきました。

I wholeheartedly recommend Sweet Bean if you enjoy Japanese cinema. It will leave you feeling uplifted and encourage you to appreciate the blessings in your life. The film offers a beautiful escape from Western realities, immersing you in the joyful season of sakura. Its slow pace, typical of many Japanese films, allows you to fully connect with the characters. Thank you!
